The Parable Of The Sower

Matthew 13:23

As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it.
He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.

Story summary

In this family devotional, Greybobby and friends find themselves in a real-life version of The Parable of The Sower as they try to grow their own gardens and deal with hard-packed, rocky, thorny, and good soil. They learn about how the seed in the Parable represents God’s Word, and how the different soils represent the different ways that people respond when they hear God’s Word.

Matthew 13:23

As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.

What Did We Learn?

  • Today we learned that Jesus told a story about a farmer who scattered seeds on four different kinds of soil. The seed was the same, but the soil was different.
  • Jesus said the seed represents God's Word, and the different soils represent the different ways people respond when they hear God's Word.
  • Some people have hard hearts and don't receive God's Word.
  • Some hear God's Word and receive it with joy, but when following Jesus becomes difficult, they don't have deep roots and give up.
  • Others allow the cares of this world and their desire for other things to crowd out God's Word.
  • But some hear God's Word, understand it, and let it take root in their hearts so that it produces fruit in their lives.
  • That's why we need to ask ourselves, "What kind of soil is in my heart?"
  • Are we listening to God's Word? Are we believing God's Word? Are we letting God's Word change the way we live?
  • The good news is that Jesus doesn't just tell us to have good hearts. He changes our hearts so that His Word can take root in us and produce good fruit.
  • So let's listen carefully to God's Word, believe what He says, and let His Word grow in our hearts.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving us Your Word.
Please help us to have hearts that are ready to listen, believe, and obey.
Help us not to let other things distract us or keep Your Word from growing in our lives.
Thank You that Jesus changes our hearts and helps us grow to be more like Him.
May our lives produce good fruit that shows others that we belong to You.
In Jesus's Name we pray,
Amen.

Discussion Questions

  1. What kind of soil do you think is in your heart?
  2. How can God help change your heart so that His Word can take root and produce good fruit?
