Story summary

In this family devotional from The Parable of The Good Samaritan, Greybobby becomes trapped under a fallen tree in the woods. After several of his classmates pass by and refuse to help, Greybobby is ultimately rescued by someone who wasn’t a friend, but decided to be a good neighbor.

Luke 10:27

And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”

What Did We Learn?

  • Jesus teaches us that being a good neighbor means showing mercy to people who need our help, even when they aren't our friends, even when they are different from us, and even when helping them costs us something.
  • The Holy Spirit helps us see the needs of others and gives us a heart that wants to help.
  • When we see someone who needs our help, let's not ask, "Is that person my friend?" Instead, let's ask, "How can I be a neighbor to them?"

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for showing us mercy.
Please help us to notice when people need our help and give us courage to be a good neighbor, even when it isn't easy.
Help us to love others the way Jesus has loved us.
In Jesus' Name we pray,
Amen.

Discussion Questions

  1. Do you know anyone that you can be a good neighbor to, even if they aren’t your friend?
  2. Has someone ever been a good neighbor to you even if they weren’t your friend?
