#88: Proverbs 23:6-7 - Give Out Of Love and Sincerity
Story summary
When Sheila Slyfox throws a huge dinner party for Camp Chuckleberry, Greybobby and friends plot how to eat as much food as possible. As their efforts clash with Sheila’s desire to keep things cheap and easy, they learn a lesson from Proverbs 23:6-7: to give out of love and sincerity... and to be careful of those who don’t.
Proverbs 23:6-7
Do not eat the food of a begrudging host,
do not crave his delicacies; for he is the kind of person who is always thinking about the cost.
“Eat and drink,” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

What did We Learn?
- Generosity isn’t really generosity if it’s forced or given with a grumbling heart.
- God cares more about how we give than what we give, and Jesus shows us the most generous heart of all—He gave His life for us freely, not out of guilt or pressure, but because of His great love.
- When we receive from others, or give to others, it should be done with love and sincerity. And when someone acts selfishly, we don’t need to stoop to their level.
- Jesus calls us to love, even when it’s hard.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the example of Jesus, who gave freely and loved fully.
Please help us not to give or serve out of guilt or selfishness, but from hearts filled with Your love.
And when others treat us poorly, teach us to respond with grace, not revenge.
Make us more like Jesus every day.
In Jesus’s Name we pray,
Amen.

Can you think of a time that you gave “begrudgingly,” or when you heart wasn’t full in it?
