#87: Proverbs 22:29 - Skillful Work Leads to Honor
Story summary
Camp Chuckleberry and Camp Grimbelthorn compete in an art’s and craft’s competition. Everybody is looking forward to showing off their skills... except for Betty, who is unsure about her painting abilities, especially considering that the judge of the competition is none other than King James, the stern camp counselor that they met last summer. King James reminds her, however, of Proverbs 22:29, and that skillful work leads to honor.
Proverbs 22:29
Do you see a man skillful in his work?
He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.
He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.
What did We Learn?
- The gifts and talents God gives us are not meant to be hidden away. We may feel uncertain or afraid to show others what we can do, but when we offer our work with courage and excellence, it blesses others and brings glory to God.
- Proverbs 22:29 tells us that skillful work leads to honor—but more importantly, when we do our work with a heart that wants to serve Jesus, He delights in it, no matter who else notices.
- Even if we never “stand before kings,” we already serve the King of kings—and He doesn’t measure our worth by trophies or applause but by the love and faithfulness we bring to what He’s given us to do. Through His grace, we don’t have to fear judgment or comparison.
- We can create, build, paint, serve, and share, knowing that Jesus accepts us completely and uses even our smallest offerings for something big in His kingdom.
- So whatever you do—whether it’s painting buttercups or building Chickapults—do it from the heart, for the Lord. And don’t hide your gifts. The world needs them.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gifts You give each of us. Help us not to hide what You’ve placed in us out of fear or doubt, but to offer our talents with joy and boldness.
Remind us that we don’t work to impress others, but to honor You—our gracious and loving King. Let our work point to Your goodness, and give us the courage to shine for You.
In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen.
