#71: Proverbs 20:13 - Don’t Be Lazy!

Story summary

In this Bible lesson, Greybobby shirks his chores and visits the town’s newest restaurant and arcade with his friends. He quickly learns that his laziness has cost him dearly when he is unable to paay for any of the arcade games, and unable to convince his dad to give him an advance on his allowance. He learns a lesson from Proverbs 20:13— don’t be lazy.

Proverbs 20:13

Love not sleep, lest you come to poverty;
open your eyes, and you will have plenty of bread.

What did We Learn?

  • Being prepared is wise and honors God.
  • Proverbs 20:13 warns against loving sleep too much because laziness can lead to poverty, and diligence leads to provision.
  • God calls us to be alert and diligent, not just in our work but in our spiritual lives.
  • Jesus often taught about being prepared (Matthew 25:113) and staying watchful for His return.
  • Christ didn’t live idly but carried out His mission with purpose.
  • He calls His followers to faithful work, both in daily responsibilities and in serving His Kingdom, and He gives us the strength and the power to do so.
  • The gospel reminds us that our ultimate security isn’t in our efforts but in Jesus. He redeems our weaknesses and empowers us to live wisely.

Let's Pray

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for calling us to live with wisdom and purpose.
Help us to be diligent in our work and faithful in our walk with You.
Keep us alert and ready for all You have called us to, trusting not in our own efforts but in Your grace and strength.
In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen.
