Proverbs 20:17 - Dishonest Gains Lead to Regret

Proverbs 20:17

17 Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man,
but afterward his mouth will be full of gravel.

Lesson Summary

  • Like the pommegrit fruit, sometimes things can look sweet and even taste sweet for a moment, but turn bitter, sour, or gravely with time.
  • Doing something dishonest might feel good for a moment, but ultimately it catches up with us and is like gravel in our mouths, which is a reminder of another two people at the very beginning of time who longed for a fruit they shouldn't eat and brought a curse down on the whole world.
  • Adam and Eve found the fruit was sweet, but ultimately it became bitter as it drove them away from God.
  • We must pray and ask Jesus to help us be able to avoid the temptation of ill-gotten things, and wait for what He wants to give us.
  • The bread He has to give us will leave a wonderful taste in our mouths rather than a bitter one.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
Help us to be happy with the good things you give us rather than seeking what you have chosen for us not to have.
Give us the bread that satisfies our heart, rather than that which turns bitter to our soul.
In Jesus Name we pray.
Amen.
