The Simple Catechism #6

What Is God?

God is a Spirit which means He does not have a body like people.

Story summary

Bart, Chicky 2, Sheila, and Oliver find themselves trapped on a pirate ship in the middle of a grape jelly ocean. After mistaking Chicky 2 for a mystical device that can "capture the wind," the pirate captain demands that the kids help him become the ruler over the Seven Jelly Seas... or else they'll walk the plank. As they try to plot an escape, Oliver begins to pray, and ultimately they learn that God is a Spirit which means He does not have a body like people.

John 4:24

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

What Did We Learn?

  • We learned that not everything real can be seen.
  • Just like the wind, which can move ships and fill sails even though we can’t see it, God is real and powerful even though He doesn’t have a body like people do. God is a Spirit. He can’t be captured, controlled, or put in a box.
  • We also learned that we don’t worship God with nets, machines, or tricks—we worship Him with our hearts and with what is true, just like the Bible says in John 4:24: “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for showing us that You are real and powerful, even though we cannot see You.
Thank You that You are always with us, guiding us and caring for us like the wind that moves the sails.
Help us to worship You with our hearts and to live in truth. Teach us to trust You, even when we don’t understand everything.
In Jesus’ Name we pray,
Amen.
