The Simple Catechism #16
How Are We Saved From Sin?
We are saved from sin by trusting in Jesus alone who died for our sins to give us His righteousness.
Story summary
In this simple catechism lesson, Greybobby and friends are stuck in the Smudgelands, where mud doesn’t wash off. As they try to make their way to Brighthaven, a place they must be clean to enter, they realize that they can never make themselves clean, they need help. They realize that sin is a lot like the mud in the Smudgelands, and that we are saved from sin by trusting in Jesus alone who died for our sins to give us His righteousness.
2 Corinthians 5:21
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
What Did We Learn?
- Sin is like being covered in smudges we can’t wash off ourselves. No matter how hard we try, we can’t make our hearts clean enough.
- But, just like the King of Brighthaven didn’t leave the smudged outside forever, but provided clean robes so that anyone who would come in faith could be made clean and welcomed in, God provided a way for us to be made clean: Jesus/
- We are all stained by sin, and we cannot fix ourselves. But Jesus came into our dirty world, took our sin upon Himself on the cross, and gave us His righteousness, His perfect, spotless standing before God.
- We are saved from sin by trusting in Jesus alone who died for our sins to give us His righteousness. Not by trying harder, not by cleaning ourselves up, but by trusting Him and being clothed in what He gives.
- We are now invited to point others to the only way into the Kingdom: Jesus, the One who makes the unclean clean.
