The Simple Catechism #21

What sign did Jesus give us to aid our faith until He comes?

The Lord’s Supper (or Communion or The Eucharist)

Story summary

In this simple catechism lesson, Greybobby and friends visit the town of banquet to join in a feast in honor of a heroic king, and to learn how The Lord's Supper reminds us that Jesus died for our sins.

1 Corinthians 11:26

For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

What Did We Learn?

  • Greybobby and his friends discovered that the Lord's Supper is a special meal that Jesus gave His people.
  • Just like the mice in the town of Banquet gathered to remember how King Tuskan had saved them and to wait for the day he would return, Christians gather around the Lord's Table to remember that Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins and to look forward to the day when He comes again.
  • Sometimes waiting can be hard. We might wonder when Jesus will return or if He has forgotten us.
  • The Lord's Supper reminds us that Jesus always keeps His promises.
  • If He loved us enough to die and rise again for us, then we can trust Him to come back just as He said He would.
  • So whenever you see God's people celebrating the Lord's Supper, remember: we are saying, "Jesus saved us, Jesus is with us, and Jesus is coming again!"

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving us the Lord's Supper to help us remember how much Jesus loves us.
Thank You that Jesus died for our sins and rose again.
Help us trust Your promises and patiently wait for the day when Jesus returns and we will be with Him forever.
In Jesus' Name we pray,
Amen.
